Full day tour from Skopje to National Park Mavrovo. Clean air, mountain sun, pure water, grazing fields, trees, flowers, forest fruit, and pleasant fragrance all around you. Blue skies above you, green fields beneath you, a hypnotizing harmony of colors and sounds. Ideal atmosphere for adventures who want to escape from the everyday life and enjoy the nature in the Mavrovo National park. This is home to the richest animals in Macedonia: rice, bear, eagle, and wild goat. It is an ideal place for fishing, hiking, photo-safari, hunting, mountain biking, in winter for skiing. We drive around the artificial lake Mavrovo to see the most pictures sunken church of St. Nikola. This church was built in 1857 in the Mavrovo field which existed at that time. The church was submerged in 1957 in the process of building the hydro systems of Mavrovo. Although it is underwater in the biggest period of the year, in rare occasions when the lake water withdraws, you can still see its solid construction.
The road from Mavrovo will take us to Galicnik village which is most pronounced in the Macedonian culture and tradition. The very path is quite picturesque through forests and hills. People from Galichnik and northwestern Macedonia produced local yellow cheese (Kaskaval), as well as the local salt brine white cheese "belo sirenje". The most important event in the village is the Galichnik Wedding, a traditional wedding custom that takes place every year in the summer (in July) on the day of the village holiday of St. Petrovden.
Tours continue to monastery complex St. Jovan Bigorski dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. One of the most valuable treasures of the monastery is the iconostasis created by Petre Filipovski Garkata from the nearby village of Gari. This iconostasis is considered the most beautiful and most valuable iconostasis in carving with wood. In addition to the iconostasis, the monastery is also known by the icon of St. John the Baptist, which is believed to have a miraculous power. Its location provides beautiful views of the beautiful valley of the Radika River, surrounded by wild slopes and alpine summits on the massive mountain Bistra.
The Duf waterfall as it made its way through the rocks near the village Rostushe it carved the most spectacular and grandiose waterfall in the western part of Macedonia. The waterfall is around 30 meters high and it is positioned on 1500 meter above the sea level. Moreover, it belongs in the areas of the National Park Mavrovo.
Our tour will end with a visit to the church of St. George the Victorious in Rajcica near Debar. In this female monastery, from the 11th century, is kept part of the cross of Jesus and a small part of the hand of St. George the Victorious. On the way back to Skopje we will have late traditional lunch in the restaurant KAJ TETKA VIKI in Mavrovo.
