Canyon Matka

Half day tour of Matka, the most beautiful place in Skopje.

The tour starts with pick up from your accommodation and going to Canyon Matka.

When we arrive at Matka, we start to walk along the bank of the River Treska – which is famous for the competitions in kayaking that take place each year. We follow the path that goes by the dam and the man-made lake Matka and we reach the Church of St. Andrew.

After this we go on a boat ride in the canyon Matka (about 10km long) and we enjoy the magnificent surroundings, the scents of the flora and the songs of the numerous birds that live here. We visit cave Vrelo. The total length of the cave composed of two halls is 176 m. There are two small lakes within the cave and it is decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. After that we go to see the entrance (in the rocks nearby) to the second deepest underwater cave in Europe and one of the deepest in the world.

After the boat ride, there is an option, depending on your physical fitness, for hiking about 30/40 minutes in one direction uphill and visiting the Church of St Nikola Shishovski – which is on the opposite side of Lake Matka from the Church of St Andrea. The high location (500m above sea level) gives you a spectacular view of Lake Matka and the Church of St Andrea below. Most pictures of the lake and St Andrea that you see in guidebooks and postcards are taken from this place.

On our return, we stop to visit the Monastery of Matka dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, a religious festival celebrated on 28th August every year. The monastery is located on the left bank of the River Treska and was originally built around 1337.

The tour finishes with return to Skopje and drop off at your accommodation.
