Skopje & Matka Canyon tour from Ohrid

The full day tour of Matka and Skopje from Ohrid

The Tour includes visit to the canyon Matka – after 2-2.5 hours driver, we will arrive at canyon Matka –

The tour start with a visit to the Monastery of Matka dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, a religious festival celebrated on 28th August every year. The monastery is located on the left bank of the River Treska and was built around 1337.

Then we continue to walk along the bank of the River Treska – which is famous for the competitions in kayaking that take place on it. We follow the path that goes by the dam and the man-made lake Matka and we reach the Monastery of St. Andrew.

After this we go on a boat ride on the canyon Matka (8km long) and we enjoy the magnificent surroundings, the scents of the flora and the songs of the numerous birds that live here. If we are lucky, we will be able to see some wild animals like ducklings swimming in the lake, or a wild boar, a hare, or the like.We are visiting the cave Vrelo. The cave Vrelo is located in the Canyon of Matka, on the left bank of Treska River, next to the springs of Koritiste. The total length of the cave composed of two halls is 176 m. There is a lake within the cave, with a length of about 30 m and width of 2 to 4 m.

On our return, we stop to visit the monastery Matka with a church dedicated to Holy Mary is located. How the monastery, and also whole this area got the name Matka is not known. It can be assumed that the church of the monastery, and also the monastery was central (Uterus – Matka) for more churches, monasteries and monastic hermitage that were in this part of the region.

After visit canyon Matka, we continue to Skopje – where start a Skopje City Walking Tour –  where we will see a Fortress Kale, Mustafa Pasha mosque, Skopje Old Bazaar, Skopje Old bridge, Skopje main square, Mother Teresa museum.

After that we drive back to Ohrid.
